Moving - Tips On How To Pack Your Household Items

When moving your household goods to your new home, it is important to keep in mind a few things. All the items in your home should be securely stored when moving in order to prevent any unnecessary damage to your belongings.

Clothing

Clothing is one of the easier items to pack up for a move or storage. Still, you don't want to get any of your clothes ruined when packing them up. Here are a few tips to make packing your clothes easier:

-Wardrobe boxes are an excellent solution for packing clothing. Wardrobe boxes typically have a rod on the top of the box, on which clothes can be hanged.

-Pack all your loose articles in bags, such as shoes, socks, undergarments, etc. If the wardrobe boxes are big enough, these bags can be stored at the bottom, beneath the hanging clothes. This helps conserve space.

-Your dresser drawers can also be used to pack your clothes in. If this is what you decide to do, take the drawers out of the dresser and move separately. This makes the dresser much lighter and easier to handle during the move.

-Remember, too many clothes in one container can make it too heavy very quickly. Use several smaller boxes, rather than one large one. Large cardboard boxes have a tendency to rip and collapse when over packed with too many clothes.

-Don't stack any other boxes on top of those with clothing in them. This may crush the box and damage your clothes.

Follow these tips and your clothing will be safe during your move. If storing your clothes, remember to keep them in a dry, cool place. Avoid storing them anywhere that bugs and moisture can damage your clothing.

Mirrors

Mirrors are very delicate and must be handled with the utmost care when packing to be moved or stored. Here is some advice:

-Wrap the mirror with a generous amount of paper or other packing material. Thick blankets work well for this.

-Boxes are available for specifically packing mirrors. If you can't find any, or don't want to buy them, break down an old cardboard box and wrap the mirror with it. Tape the sides to prevent the cardboard from coming off.

-Always stand your mirror up in the moving truck and/or storage container. Never place mirrors flat on anything, as this is a sure way to break it.

Try and place your mirrors someplace safe on the moving truck or storage unit, such as against a wall. Storing them between mattress or box springs is a good idea.

Follow these tips and work carefully when handling mirrors, and you shouldn't have a problem moving or storing them.

I Need To Transfer Over The Border

Working for a large corporation has many benefits and occasionally a few drawbacks. Being offered a promotion that requires you to move to another country is both. Recently I was asked to transfer from my comfortable long term job in New York City to a higher paying position in Toronto. Moving from the USA to Canada didn't seem like such a big deal but there were a number of issues that surfaced.

The first and most important to me as a native New Yorker was that the Blue Jays are division rivals and I would be forced to watch them if I needed to go to a game. This problem was quickly resolved when I looked at the schedule and realized that the Yankees came to town for a dozen games a year.

The second issue was tax status. Would I still be an American employee or would I now be obligated to pay Canadian income taxes? What about my benefits? Would I need to change over my health insurance or retirement fund? These were all legitimate questions that I needed to seek answers to before I could call the moving company to come and get my stuff.

With a little investigation I found out that I would have to pay Canadian taxes and that my 401K would not change but would now be calculated in Canadian dollars. The health care system is socialized in Canada so my health insurance would change. I also learned about a tax balancing program that my company had in place to make relocation decisions a little easier. The tax rate in Canada is higher and the US dollar is worth more so my numbers were going to be adjusted accordingly. After doing the math I found that the pay raise I was getting was almost 20%.

Needless to say, I started looking for a moving company immediately. I applied for an immigration certificate and put in the paperwork for permanent residency. Taking the advice of some of my colleagues who had similar experiences I asked a lot questions during my search for the right moving company that could handle an international relocation. I had built up a collection of very nice material possessions in New York and I didn't want an amateur moving company losing or breaking my belongings.

I packed all of my things and I made a list of each item with the value of the item written next to it. I was told that this was required by Canadian Customs. To make simplify the process I used the itemized list from my insurance company. I took my physical exam and got my paperwork in order, put my furniture and appliances in the hands of the moving company, and transferred over the border to Canada. It's the best decision I've made yet. Life here is good, the people are wonderful, and I don't plan on leaving any time soon.

Moving - Do It Yourself Or Hire Movers?

Seattle and the surrounding area has a surprising variety of living conditions to choose from. The extremely wealthy and the nearly destitute live within blocks of each other in the city, the differences in housing stretching mainly to amenities such as indoor pools, individual laundry machines and, of course, views.

The nature of young, urban life today is a nearly nomadic lifestyle, moving in to a place for a year and then leaving when something nicer or cheaper or closer to work opens up at the end of the lease term. This does get expensive, what with truck rental and move-in costs.

Many young people choose to alleviate some of the costs by renting a U-Haul and moving themselves from one point to another. Other, more established movers are quite tired of moving their own things and will hire a moving company such as Mountain Movers to do the heavy lifting.

Some advantages to moving your own things include knowing exactly whose fault it is when something is broken after you unpack. You also are rewarded with the strain of picking up and hauling all your life to an elevator (if you're lucky, not stairs) and into the rental truck... by yourself. You may even get lucky and be able to bribe your friends to help you move, and if you're even luckier, they can stay for the whole move, moving you out of your old place and unloading the truck at the new place.

These are the considerations you need to take into account. Can you move that couch by yourself? Do you trust yourself to do it without scraping it against the concrete outside? Can you lift each of your boxes of books alone and then have the energy to unpack the truck when you get to your new home?

Those who don't have the time or simply can't do physical labor all day can hire a mover for roughly twice or three times the cost of renting a truck for yourself. Movers will get your job done right, the first time, and much more quickly than you could doing it yourself. If your time is more valuable to you than it would cost to hire a mover, then obviously that is the way to go, completely discounting whether or not you CAN move everything by yourself.

A good moving company will let you get everything you need for a lot less than you'd expect. A good, reputable moving company will have screened its employees prior to hire, so you know that you can trust that your things are getting the utmost care. However, when packing there are quite a few things to keep in mind.

You need to make sure to pack heavy things in small boxes. Just because it's not you that's moving it, doesn't mean that you should pack as much as possible in the biggest boxes. Take care to keep your hired movers from being unable to lift. If they strain their backs doing your job, they can't move on to the next job and may miss out on two weeks worth of work! They will most likely refuse to carry a box that's too heavy to be safe, however, so be prepared.

Make certain when you are packing that you secure the bottom and top of each box with tape. If the bottom falls out of a box during transport, it's actually your fault for not securing it. If you are unsure if the box is secure, just put more tape perpendicular to the opening.

Large, fluffy or light items should go in large boxes. The basic principle is that if the item can fit in a box, it should go in a box. Items like framed paintings should be put in boxes that are intended to hold them securely. Clothing that needs to remain hung should be first bound in a plastic bag the way the drycleaner does, and then put inside a wardrobe box. A wardrobe box is a very tall box with a metal crossbar in it for hanging clothes on. It's usually about 5 feet tall.

Another thing to be aware of, is that furniture shouldn't go in a box. Ikea and other build it yourself furniture has a tendency to not survive moving. It was intended to be built and then remain in one spot, and then be thrown away when its usefulness has worn out.

In all, it could be easier to move everything yourself if you have the time to do so, and the friends to help, but it's good to know that you can always hire movers to help you out.
